i was just thinking about who i should vote for. either way i think this is an improvment. maybe i shouldnt say improvemtn. progress i think is better. either way women and the african american community have come very far. i honestly never expected to see a female on the ticket this soon. I have expected it to happy but i didnt think it would be for at least another ten years. The reason for this is because I didn't think the country was ready for that yet. now while the president wont be female this is still something big, very big.

I was thinking that both parties have something very big to overcome. the republicans because well to be blunt they have a chick and a old guy. There has been alot of talk about what would happen if mccain doesn't last the next four years. he is older and has a history of health problems. you have to admit that the guy is one tough cookie though. from his time in the military as a prisoner to his battles with cancer. Then there in palin... well there is the inexperience, personal issues, and she is very conservative. I think the one thing she will have the most trouble with is the fact that she is a woman. There are alot of people that are just not ready for a lady in the office. Its sad, people expected there to be flying cars and all these robots by now lol! instead of all of that we are still fighting for gender equality. I personally don't care if the president or vice president is a guy or not. What I am more concerned with is her inexperience because if something does happen to mccain we will have a rookie finding herself in the most stressfull and important job in the whole country.

To some degree obama has to deal with this as well. he is younger and pretty inexperienced. I also think there are alot of people that still are too racist to be ok with a black guy as the president. its terrible that we havent gotten over those feelings by now but only an idiot would say there isnt any racism left in our country. after all of those that have suffered and died for improvement in the way groups of people are treated, not all that much has changed.

tired as you know what!!!

i was up till four in the morning last night. the reason? I bought a zune but there were two cd's that they don't offer. I did find them on rhapsody so I wanted to get them there because it would be a bit cheaper than buying them through the zune marketplace. The only problem is that the zune will not work with windows media player. that totally doesnt make any sense to me though. the zune is a microsoft product so you think it would have no problem working with anything in windows. sheesh!

anyways, so i was looking online and found a download that would allow media player to connect with my zune. that worked but it still wouldnt sync anything. so when it got to be four i just gave up. I love my new mp3 player but somtimes it can get a little frustratrating. I have everything working now so I am so bloody happy!

the need for church

lately I have been following some religious blogs, both Mormon and others. I am keep having this burning desire to come back to the church. Well I don't know if I could really say back. I was baptised and then very soon after started having doubts. Know in hind sight I don't think I was ever really 100% sure that this was the true church or even just the church for me for that matter. I think I went more along with it for Jason. Even though I haven't gone to church in about the last year I never totally left the church if that makes any sense. I have been off and on reading alot of blogs and keeping up with the church news.

The other night I just had a feeling. A need to go to church. I can't say that I have ever had that before. lol I'm actually looking foward to Sunday! I think perhaps the problem I had before was I was in this new church and I started going to serivces sometimes but I wasn't going regularly and I wasn't getting involved with the ward in any other ways. I'm not sure how to start though.

i read this on a blog today. i think it puts too much emphasis on the women though. yes the women have stopped being so modest but so have the men. modesty and the wholeness of our culture cannot be held just with the women.

Watching an amusing older clip from the Colbert Report introduced me to Ariel Levy and her book, Female Chauvinist Pigs. I picked it up at the library and was impressed with her thesis. Citing pop-culture and the waves of feminism, Levy concludes that the feminist and sexual revolutions of our parents’ generation have resulted in a raunch culture, where women idolize porn stars, strippers, and other sexual idols, like Paris Hilton. Instead of shunning the red light district and the Playboy bunny symbol, many women are embracing them. She explores the depth of this trend and the rationale behind it in startling detail.
A journalist by trade, Levy’s writing is precise and engaging. She explores the difference between sexiness and sexuality and explains that they aren’t always the same thing. Our culture has come to see sexiness as the same as worthwhile, with business and military using the term, “sexy” to describe something that has nothing to do with arousal.
She interviews women in “Girls Gone Wild” and teens who flaunt their sexiness only to find that they don’t do these things for any personal sexual gratification. They’ve taken to imitating women who’s job it is to fake sexual arousal. What kind of a role model is that? It’s as though the turning on of others is the sole purpose of their sexuality.

As a Mormon and feminist, I was a little shocked at some of the trends she points out in her book, but also glad to see the puzzle pieces that I’ve noticed put together in a coherent picture. Abercrombie sells thong underwear to girls ages 7-12, Girls Gone Wild is a hit, Paris Hilton is a star because of her porn, and I’ve received coupons inviting me to have my vagina surgically altered to look more attractive (like a porn star). While I don’t think Mormon women are as extreme as some of the examples in Levy’s book, many are deeper in that we admit. The focus on tanned skin, bleached blonde hair, breast implants, and sexy clothing (albeit garment worthy) are part of many of the LDS women I see around me.
Like other national trends, Mormon women don’t seem to be excluded from the “raunch culture” but just affected to a lesser degree. Just like the average teen is sexually active before high school, my experience is that Mormon teens are also increasingly sexually active, as evidenced by the increase of civil marriages with the intention of temple sealings later.

So, following the instruction to remain chaste until marriage is a difficult thing to do by any measure, but is it impossible in our current ‘raunch culture’? Can LDS moms with tans, fake boobs, and clever phrases etched over the behinds of their too-tight sweat pants really pass on the message of chasitity to their teen sons and daughters? Or, maybe it doesn’t matter. Perhaps the sexiness is part of our liberation, as many in the newest wave of feminism seem to believe.
I’m, not convinced. As Levy writes, “The rise of the raunch culture does not show how far women have come, it only shows how far they have to go.”
